PROJECTS - COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Community Development - ZIMBABWE

Volunteer at this non-profit program that provides early childhood development educating 4,500 children in 30 different centers in the Hwange District of Zimbabwe. Opportunity to contribute in a number of ways including the day to day running of projects, conversing in English with the children, feeding and playing, helping with internal reporting and logistical support. Volunteers may travel to different centers as needed.

  • Minimum:  1 week

  • Lodging/Meals:  Host Family; 2 Meals per day at Home Stay (Breakfast & Dinner), Lunch provided at project on Weekdays and at Home Stay on Weekends

Community Development/Abagore Farming Co-Op - RWANDA

Empower women on this labor intensive farming program. Volunteers help support women to earn an income through farming maize, carrots and cabbages which they sell in local markets. Besides contributing to food security and nutrition and health, women are taught economic and trading skills and help to train other women in the community.

Construction – Housing & Schools - RWANDA

Helping disadvantaged and impoverished people in Rwanda, this project helps to build new homes and school buildings in Rwamagana, which is an hour east of the capital, Kigali. Many of the families this project supports, lost their homes in the horrific 1994 genocide.

Drug Abuse Awareness & Outreach - KENYA

Volunteers work alongside locals to run a drug awareness community center in Diani Beach. Volunteers will run daily outreach walks into the community to help keep users and non-users safe, raise drug awareness and assist with other projects related to this program. Volunteers will be working among drug users, so you must be 21+ years old and it will require a great deal of strength and maturity.

Environmental Education/Sustainable Gardening - TANZANIA

This program is hugely rewarding as volunteers make a difference in the health and wellbeing of impoverished communities. Work may be done in schools or with the local Maasai tribe. In schools, volunteers may help plant sustainable gardens to contribute to healthy lunches or educate about water hygiene and recycling projects. Time can also be spent in remote villages educating about the environment, healthy eating, and basic hygiene.

  • Minimum:  1 week
  • Location:  Arusha, Tanzania
  • Lodging/Meals: Guest House (Hostel); 2-3 Meals per day included, depending on where you are working

HIV/AIDS Education & Support - KENYA

There is a massive HIV/AIDS epidemic in Kenya and volunteers are needed to assist this program in delivering essential services. The program goals are to educate children and adults on HIV/AIDS to reduce the infection rate and support those affected. Volunteers will visit impoverished areas of Nairobi delivering food, medicine and providing basic medical care.

HIV/AIDS Support - ZIMBABWE

Work with orphaned children who are living with or been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Volunteers assist with clubs and after school sports including the popular sport of soccer. Volunteers receive training prior to working on this project. Besides assisting in running the programs, help is needed to educate children on how to stay safe from contracting the disease or how to manage living with the disease.

Refugee Projects - KENYA

After the results of the 2007 elections, more than 600,000 were forced to flee from their homes in fear of their lives. Many of these people sought refuge in open land across the country. The UN donated tents, which have been upgraded since then and these villages are now referred to as SIDP (Settled Internally Displaced People). There are still around 600 people living in these villages and volunteers are needed to help teach the children, continue the development of sustainability programs and run small medical clinics.

Social Welfare – SOUTH AFRICA

Opportunity to work with abused women and orphaned or abused children, volunteers must be flexible and have a lot of patience.  Volunteering with people that may have physical and mental challenges, there is an opportunity for volunteers to make a difference.  Duties can vary greatly, but it is important to understand the challenges with these types of placements.

Women’s Support – MOMBASSA, KENYA

Volunteers will work with a local team to support approximately 300 women in the community.  Volunteers will work on economic development programs that support women, help improve the situation of many impoverished women and support women with HIV/AIDS.  This program has tremendous success empowering women to improve their current situation.

  • Location:  Mombasa, Kenya

Women’s Support – NAIROBI, KENYA

Female Volunteers will work with The Women’s Rescue Center to help give abused and neglected women a safe refuge. The home is in the Wangigi area of Nairobi and it caters to 20-25 young women. The program empowers women and helps them achieve a brighter future.

  • Minimum:  1 week
  • Location:  Nairobi, Kenya
  • Lodging/Meals:  Volunteer House; 2 Meals per day included (Breakfast & Dinner)

Women’s Support - MOROCCO

Volunteers will help educate girls and young women who otherwise would have been deprived of training and education.  Volunteers will teach English and lead workshops designed to help empower women and improve their self-esteem.

  • Lodging/Meals:  Volunteer House; 2 – 3 Meals a day included

Women’s Support - TANZANIA

Working with women who have suffered from abuse, this program offers temporary residence for girls, young mothers and their babies where they get medical assistance, counseling and advocacy.  Volunteers may help educating the women in mathematics, English, computer, health education and life skills, or with one-year vocational training in cooking and tailoring or entrepreneurial skills.  Volunteers can also assist supervising children in the day care or pre-school.  This program helps support and empower women to have a successful future despite where they came from.
