SOUTH AFRICA - CONSERVATION PROJECTS

HANDS ON BIG FIVE

Plunge into a hands-on Conservation Management Project in one of South Africa's most scenic “Big 5” game reserves. Your work will include habitat rehabilitation; leopard research, elephant impact monitoring, game counts, telemetry tracking of lions, hyena tracking and monitoring and much more. Management activities could include: game counts, soil erosion control, reserve clean-up operations, road maintenance, habitat rehabilitation, alien vegetation control and parasite control for animals. There are also several Research projects being undertaken at any given time.

BIG CATS SANCTUARY

Opportunity to learn about the history of Big Cats and their fight against survival including work with Cheetahs, Lions, Pumas, Jaguars, Bengal Tigers, and Leopards and educating tourists about these unique predators.

CHEETAH CENTER

The Cheetah & Wildlife Ranch aims to ensure our children never have to watch cheetahs become extinct.  The Cheetah Center is guarded by the majestic Waterberg mountains allowing the cheetahs to flourish in the uncommercialized area of peace and tranquility.  Tasks include feeding, cleaning, exercising the animals, and certain veterinary tasks.  Also responsible for maintenance of the center including invasive vegetation removal, making enclosures more habitable, repairing roads, cutting back brush, etc.

NOAH'S ARK IN AFRICA

If you want to get up close and personal with wild animals and birds from South Africa and beyond and don't mind getting your hands dirty, then Noah's Ark is the place to be.  Hands on work in the rehabilitation including bottle feeding and surrogate parenting, as well as cultivating public awareness.

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION

Be an active part in the conservation of Africa’s wilderness and wildlife, working with wild and tame animals as well as assisting with hands on conservation work.  Volunteers will be exposed to all aspects of conservation from game capture and predator management to harvesting wild plants for relocation.  Opportunity to work with Big Cats Lion and Leopard Sanctuary, animal rehabilitation in the Rhino Awareness Center, research, camera trapping and monitoring brown hyenas, and much more.  This program will allow volunteers to help uplift the environment and create a better living area for the wildlife living on reserves.

 NOTE: There is a minimum number of weeks that a volunteer must do for each program.  These minimums vary depending on the program. Please keep this in mind when choosing a program.  It is also possible to do two or more programs back to back.  Contact the CCUSA office for specific details.
